Choose working dog food by type

Start with age, recipe type or dietary need, then narrow the range by protein source and price.

What is working dog food?

Working dog food is complete dog food formulated for dogs with higher energy demands than the average adult dog. It is chosen to support condition, digestion, stamina, and recovery in dogs that train, work, or exercise regularly, including gundogs, HPRs, spaniels, and other active breeds.

Compared with many standard adult dog foods, working dog food often provides higher protein and fat levels to match the calories a busy dog actually uses. Fat is an important energy source for active dogs, while protein helps maintain muscle and condition.

Working dog food can be a practical choice for dogs with a consistent workload, from full days in the field to regular training sessions or an active daily routine. It may also suit dogs that struggle to hold condition or weight on a standard feed.

If you are unsure whether your dog needs a working recipe, the simplest guide is workload and condition. A dog that is active most days, loses weight easily, or needs support through a busy season may do better on a food designed with that extra demand in mind.

VAT-free pricing

In the UK, food sold specifically for working dogs is zero-rated for VAT. Every working dog food product in this range qualifies, so the price shown is the price you pay. That can make a meaningful difference when you are feeding one dog through a busy season or running a small kennel year-round.

Grain-free or grain-inclusive?

Not every working dog needs grain-free food, and not every dog with a sensitive stomach is grain-intolerant. The best choice depends on the dog in front of you: age, workload, stools, coat, weight, appetite and how well they settle on a recipe.

Grain-inclusive recipes, such as chicken and rice, turkey and rice or lamb and rice, are a sensible choice for many active dogs with no particular dietary sensitivity. They usually offer good value per bag and suit dogs that do well on traditional working dog food.

Grain-free and no-added-grain recipes use alternatives such as sweet potato or potato, paired with protein sources including salmon, trout, duck, venison, chicken, turkey, pork, lamb and fish. These recipes may suit dogs that seem to do better without cereals, especially where digestion, coat condition or food sensitivity are important considerations.

If you are unsure, ask us - we are always happy to talk through options.

Choosing by workload

A dog in hard work may need more energy through the season, while a dog in lighter work may hold condition better on a lower-fat recipe. Puppies, older dogs and dogs with sensitive digestion also need a bit more care when choosing food.

As a practical starting point:

  • Choose a higher-energy recipe for dogs in regular training, trialling, beating, picking-up or a busy working season.
  • Choose a steadier adult recipe for dogs in moderate work or dogs that gain weight easily.
  • Consider fish-based recipes where coat condition, skin sensitivity or digestion are priorities.
  • Consider senior recipes for older dogs that still need good nutrition but no longer have the same workload.

Keep feeding amounts steady when changing food. Introduce the new recipe gradually and adjust the amount once your dog's digestion and condition have settled.
