Welcome to the WorkingHPRs Blog: Practical Nutrition for Working Dogs
WorkingHPRs is built for people who actually work their dogs — gundogs, active pets, and dogs that train hard, walk far, and need food that supports performance, digestion, and recovery.

Why we’re writing this blog
If you’ve ever tried to keep a dog in proper working condition — fit, lean, switched-on and able to recover day after day — you’ll know one thing: food matters. Not in a fluffy “premium lifestyle” way, but in a practical sense: steady energy, reliable digestion, good coat and skin, and consistent condition.
This blog is a short, useful resource for owners who want to feed better without the nonsense. We’ll share what we’ve learned running WorkingHPRs for working-dog people — including tips that help you make confident decisions whether your dog is training weekly or doing full-on seasonal work.
What we’ll cover
- Feeding for workload — how to adjust when training ramps up (or drops off)
- Body condition — staying lean without your dog running flat
- Digestion and “output” — because poo tells the truth
- Transitions — how to change foods without upset stomachs
- Supplements — when they’re worth it (and when they’re not)
- Seasonal feeding — winter work vs summer heat, hydration, and recovery
One simple principle
Our approach is straightforward: feed the dog in front of you. Age, workload, temperament, gut sensitivity — it all matters. The goal isn’t “the richest bag on the shelf”. It’s the right fuel that helps your dog feel good, work hard, and recover well.
If you’re new here, have a look around the site. And if you want a second opinion on feeding amounts or how to transition, drop us a message — we’re happy to help (and we’ll tell you if we think you’re overthinking it).
Note: Nothing on this blog is veterinary advice. If your dog is unwell or you’re worried, always speak to your vet.
